The
Wheels to Work program assists Georgians coming off of welfare with the
purchase of reliable transportation to go to work. Program participants
receive zero interest and low down payment loans to buy approved vehicles.
The Wheels to Work program is enabling individuals moving from public
assistance to employment to solve their own transportation problems, by
providing them with independent transportation solutions. Georgia is one
of the few states in the nation with a fully-funded, fully-operational
Wheels to Work program.
Oconee River RC&D continues to
implement the Wheels to Work program in our 14 county Council Area. Our
clients pay off their loans and move out of the program - as the program
was intended.
During
August 2005, two Wheels to Work car placements were made to deserving
women. The first placement was made in
Morgan
County to a hardworking single mother
of three children. She has been in her current full-time job for two
years, and was using a rental car to get to work. To quote her, “Thank
you so much. My kids really love this car, and we now get to the doctor’s
office on time.”
The
second placement was made in Baldwin
County to another hardworking single
mother of two children. She works on the night shift at the Baldwin State
Prison, a job she has held for over three years. Prior to receiving her
car through the Wheels To Work program, she was relying on family,
friends, and co-workers to take her to work. Her ambitions are reaching
higher, as she has applied to the
Central
Georgia Technical
College licensed practical nursing
program. She intends to keep working while going to school. The full
story of her car placement was covered on the front page of the August 25, 2005 , editions of The
Union-Recorder and The Baldwin
Bulletin.
